Here’s exactly what each service involves.
Every ducted air conditioning installation we carry out starts with an onsite assessment, not a floor plan and a phone call. We measure the rooms, check ceiling cavity clearance, assess insulation, glazing and orientation, and calculate the heating load properly before we recommend anything.
From there we design the duct layout and zone plan around how your household actually lives, then handle the full scope: indoor fan coil, outdoor unit, insulated ductwork sized per room and installed to AS 4254, correctly sized return air, zone dampers and controls, dedicated electrical circuit, refrigerant lines with full evacuation before charging, and complete commissioning with airflow balanced at every outlet.
Most Canberra homes are completed in one to two days. Whether it’s a retrofit into an existing home, a rough-in during frame stage on a new build, or a conversion from ducted gas heating, you’ll get fixed pricing agreed before we start and no variations discovered mid-job.
Ducted systems in Canberra work harder than most, running for heating through winter and cooling through summer with barely a month off. Annual servicing is what keeps that workload from shortening the system’s life.
A proper service covers indoor and outdoor coil cleaning, condensate drain clearing, refrigerant pressure verification, electrical connection checks, filter replacement, zone motor and damper operation, and airflow testing across the outlets. We check defrost cycle operation too, which matters here in a way it doesn’t in warmer parts of the country.
The pay-off is straightforward. A maintained system runs at lower pressures, uses less power, leaks less refrigerant and lasts considerably longer. A neglected one loses efficiency gradually, so you rarely notice until the bills climb or something fails on the coldest morning of the year.
When a ducted system stops performing, the fault is usually one of a handful of things: a failed zone motor leaving a room stuck open or closed, a blocked condensate drain, a control board fault, a refrigerant leak, a seized fan motor, or a compressor issue on an ageing unit.

We know how these homes behave through an ACT winter, and we design around that rather than applying a standard configuration and hoping it holds up in July.
In most Canberra homes, yes. Once you’re conditioning four or more rooms, multiple splits mean multiple outdoor units, multiple installations and multiple electrical circuits. A single ducted system is frequently comparable or cheaper, and you get consistent temperature throughout, one control point, and no wall units or row of condensers along your exterior.
Yes, provided the system is properly specified. The key is sizing on heating load rather than cooling load, and selecting a model with strong low-ambient performance. Published heating capacity is usually rated at 7°C outdoor temperature, and Canberra spends a lot of winter well below that. Specified correctly, reverse cycle is the most efficient heating available and will hold your home comfortable all season.
It depends on far more than bedroom count. Floor area, ceiling height, insulation quality, window size and orientation all shift the figure significantly. Most Canberra three-bedroom homes land somewhere around 10kW, four-bedroom homes higher again, and larger or double-storey properties higher still. We calculate the heat load on site rather than estimating from a floor plan.
Most standard Canberra homes are completed in one to two days. Day one covers the outdoor unit, refrigerant lines, positioning the indoor unit and the bulk of the ductwork. Day two covers return air, zone motors, electrical connection, commissioning and handover. Expect some dust and noise on day one.
Usually the better path is converting the whole system to ducted reverse cycle, reusing the existing duct network where it’s sound. You end up with one system handling both heating and cooling rather than two systems to maintain, and you can often remove the gas connection entirely. We inspect the existing ductwork before quoting rather than assuming it’s reusable.
Single-phase ducted systems are available up to around 18kW, which covers the vast majority of Canberra homes. Larger properties may require three-phase, and we confirm that during the onsite assessment so it appears on your quote rather than as a surprise on installation day.
Generally around 400mm for a standard ducted installation. Where that isn’t available, underfloor ducting or bulkheads built to conceal the ductwork become the solution. Homes with cathedral ceilings or no usable cavity need this assessed properly, which is one of several reasons we won’t quote without seeing the house.
